Punta
del Diablo is located at Km 298 of Ruta
9 (Route 9), in the department of Rocha. This
is the most eastern seaside department in Uruguay
with more than 200 km (124 mi.) of beaches. Due
to its extraordinary appearance ; the extensive
wild landscape departs from what you usually find
in other seaside places.
Rocha comprises a wide variety of gently undulating
landscapes; sandy or stony soils, rolling plains,
fertile coastal lowlands, clusters of palm trees,
low hills, marshlands, dunes, rice fields and
a variety of croplands. Its Garzón, Rocha,
Castillos, Negra and Merín Lagoons have
one of the biggest freshwater supplies in the
country.
This department has a plentiful
variety of flora and fauna. The butiá capitata
palm tree clusters cover 70 has and are the biggest
concentration of this type of palm trees in the
world. On the shoreline of Castillos Lagoon we
can also find the largest cluster of umbra trees
in the Rio de La Plata area with an extension
of 20 km.
In Rocha you can
see some of the most meaningful historical buildings
in the country: the Santa Teresa Fortress and
the San Miguel Fort that witnessed the rivalry
between the Spanish and the Portuguese first and
then between the Uruguayan and the Brazilian who
fought for the same thing: these lands.
